Storage on separation

Storage on separation

It can happen quickly. From one moment to the next, you no longer get on with your partner. The despair is great, the reasons varied.

Even if at the beginning every relationship feels like floating on a cloud - relationships failing is the most normal thing in the world. Nobody needs to be ashamed of this.

However, you also have to be able to accept such situations. Of course, this is not always the case in an emotional state of emergency. Fortunately, in such cases there is usually help available to support you emotionally. This can be your own family or even very close friends.

Nevertheless, sometimes you may want to leave your home head over heels - or, in the worst case, have to do so due to violence or an unfavourable tenancy agreement situation.

The housing market situation in German cities, especially in the big cities, is unfortunately a disaster. In the worst-case scenario, you can and must expect not to get a flat at all.

What do you do in such a case?

These three points are important

Firstly: You need a place to stay immediately so that you can plan the next steps in the coming days if moving out is unavoidable

Secondly, you may need additional interim accommodation, as you can assume that you won't be able to find a new flat so quickly.

Thirdly: A spontaneously usable place where you can put all your things. As you can't take all your things with you straight away when you move into a new home, you need a long-term place where you can store them and where you have more space than in your temporary accommodation.

Self-storage as a problem solver

Self-storage from Lager.de is ideal for such situations. You can easily store all your things there without having to worry about them.

Thanks to a comprehensive security system, nothing can get away from Lager.de's storage units. In addition, all items are stored dry and only accessible to the customer. The storage units can be rented in various sizes. The storage box can also be flexibly rebooked as required.

The minimum rental period, if a previous home can be found, is also very short.

And very important in such a case: it's also cheap. For example, if both tenants are on the tenancy agreement, you still have to pay half the rent despite moving out and have to wait for a date to end the tenancy. It is therefore important to keep the service charges as low as possible.

A tip

A separation situation like this puts a lot of strain on the psyche - you are not as productive as usual and can no longer do many things. In such a case, it is more than legitimate to call in sick.

It doesn't help anyone at work or at university, not even yourself, if you do your work without a clear head. If you don't feel so mentally stressed, you can also take leave to organise the rest.

Accommodation for the first few days - where?

As soon as you leave your flat, you are basically homeless for the time being. However, this situation should not last too long.

The first places to go are

Firstly, your parents. If the relationship is still reasonably intact, you can always find accommodation with your parents. They would never leave you on the street and you can always count on them.

Secondly: Other relatives. The family is the strongest alliance. If it makes more sense in terms of distance to move in with other relatives, such as an aunt, brother or sister, that makes perfect sense.

Thirdly: friends. In an emergency situation like this, real friendship comes to the fore. And real friends would immediately free up a sofa for you in such an emergency situation.

Fourthly: Close colleagues. However, it is important that the bond is really strong.

Fifthly: Shared flats with friends. There should always be a place for you in shared flats if you know the people there well.

Sixth: Neighbours. If your relationship with your neighbours is very good, the local aspect is a real plus. If your former partner is not at home, you can go straight over to their flat and stay there to do things. Regenerate.

Seventhly: cheap hotels, B&Bs or similar. The problem there is always financial. Although there are now cheap providers, you have to plan on spending at least 10 euros a night

In particularly bad cases, there are also so-called women's shelters or similar accommodation for men. As nobody has to spend the night on the street in Germany, you can also use the homeless facilities run by charitable aid organisations in an extreme emergency.

Particularly important

You should always carry your wallet with all your important cards and documents as well as money. You should also take a change of clothes for the first few days, as well as a mobile phone plus charger and your house keys. Because you will definitely have to go back to your flat.

Look for temporary accommodation

As mentioned at the beginning, accommodation is often not enough. If you are lucky with your social environment, you can use the options for your first accommodation a little longer. However, if you feel bad and don't want to be a burden on others or you can't stay in the same accommodation forever, you will have to look for other interim accommodation.

These options are available

Firstly, short-term lets. These are usually holiday flats, flats and the like. However, this is usually quite expensive due to the high tourist presence of such offers and in some federal states in the grey area of legality.

Secondly: campsites. Unless you happen to be driving a large camper van, many of them offer caravans or holiday homes at low prices. Similar to such offers are the somewhat trendier tiny houses.

Thirdly: temporary living. This is now a very popular opportunity, especially for holidays, to use fully furnished flats while the owner or main tenant is away.

Fourthly: subletting. Although the main tenant must agree to this, it is otherwise permitted by law.

Further tips after the separation

The most important thing now is to keep your head. When you are at peace with yourself, you can start new projects again and continue with your everyday life.

It's also best to get organised as quickly as possible and clear out your belongings. You should also minimise contact with your former partner for the time being in order to mentally recharge your batteries.
